Marijuana and Bodybuilding

By Todd Lee M.D.

Want an excuse to smoke weed? I bet you do. Below I will describe why you should and shouldn't use marijuana and how to get the benefits without the drawbacks.

Many bodybuilders use marijuana to increase their appetite, to allow them to focus on the weight better, and to dissociate themselves from the chronic pain of the bodybuilder life.

But what is the point of it all if it turns you into a chick?

For years it has been believed that marijuana causes feminization and breast development. Does it? It turns out the answer is actually really complicated. There is a compound found in the marijuana bud called apigenin which binds to the estrogen receptor on uterus tissue and elicits no response, But here is the thing: men don't have a uterus. What men do have is a pituitary however, and the blood levels of Luteinizing Hormone, Follicle Stimulating Hormone and Prolactin are decreased in men who use marijuana. This seems to indicate that apigenin despite not having an effect on the uterus does on the pituitary, at least in men. Additionally marijuana use causes androgen binding proteins to be released to further decrease testosterone.

All this adds up to a great decrease in testicle size and circulating testosterone. This makes the balance of testosterone and estrogen shift to the estrogen side and men begin to lose masculine traits in favor of gaining feminine traits.

This is where the idea that weed makes men grow boobs and kills their sex drive comes from.

THC, the part of marijuana which gets you high and gives you the lions share of the effects, DOES NOT bind to the estrogen receptor like apigenin. So the best way to get the positive effects of marijuana and not the negative is to use liquid THC in a vaporizer.
